Updating the Tohban Website

As Tohban you may or may not have to update the Tohban website.  The following is hopefully an adequate explanation of anything you may find necessary to do.

Accessing the website

The web page sits in the ~themistohban user account. Rather than compromise the security of the account by distributing the password, an alternative system using SSH public key authentication has been set up. You will have to create an SSH identity in your UNIX account or on your PC, and send the public key to Robert Boyd (rboyd@ssl), who will add it to the list of allowed keys. When you try to log into themistohban from your UNIX account or using secure shell client on your PC, this is used to check that you are who you say you are. You enter a password to exchange the keys. You'll need to do this to upload your weekly Tohban report and to make any changes to the website. If you need instructions to create an SSH identity, email me (eastwood@ssl) or Robert.

Updating text

1.  In the case where you need to update a webpage’s text, such as to add your contact info to the schedule, change the schedule, etc., you must first download the page in order to edit it. For example, if

you are changing something on the index page, using SSH drag and drop it onto your desktop.  Then ‘right click’ it and select ‘edit’, versus ‘open’.

2.  You can now easily change the text as you would in any Word document.

3.  Save your changes, then using SSH drag and drop it from your desktop back onto the server. (NOTE: Make sure that you replace the original index page, and that the file extension is ‘.html’, not

‘.htm’.  I found that for some reason my computer saved it as a ‘.htm’ file, which doesn’t load as a page.)

Uploading your Tohban report

  1. Save your report as a ‘.txt’ (notepad) file on your computer. (The name should be in this format: Tohbanreport_2007-07-31_2007-08-06.txt)
  2. Open SSH. There is a folder called ‘tohbanreports’ in the public_html directory.
  3. Drag and drop your report into this folder.  It is now online and accessible to others.
  4. For others to find it, you must add a link to it on the Tohban report webpage.  To do this, save the report page on your computer and follow the “Updating text” instructions above.  You can add the name of your report at the bottom of the list.
  5. In order to make it a hyperlink, select the text and right click. Select “hyperlink”.  At the bottom of the screen is where you put the hyperlink address.  All hyperlinks on the Tohban website begin with: http://sprg.ssl.berkeley.edu/~themistohban/ .  You then add the folder name and filename of the document you are linking to, so for example, the link to the July 31-August 6 report looks like this: http://sprg.ssl.berkeley.edu/~themistohban/tohbanreports/Tohbanreport_2007-07-31_2007-08-06.txt

Making a hyperlink

As stated above, every hyperlink must begin with http://sprg.ssl.berkeley.edu/~themistohban/ .  This will then link directly to the file that is online.  You then add the rest of the extension, i.e. the folder(s) and the filename.  If we do it this way, there shouldn’t be problems with broken links after different people update the site.
