RHESSI Data Analysis Workshop October 18 to 22, 2004 Space Sciences Laboratory University of California Berkeley CA Recognizing that the RHESSI (Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager) observations have tremendous potential but require non-traditional analysis techniques, the 2003 Senior Review recommended that NASA provide support for training in data usage and dissemination. In response, the RHESSI team is planning a week-long workshop designed to train researchers in the RHESSI data analysis methods, including the latest developments in the software tools. The workshop is designed as an intense hands-on workshop for interested scientists at all levels of expertise, from beginners to power users. The workshop will include descriptive talks and demonstrations by the experts, including the developers of the analysis software, as well as time for one-on-one discussions on individual areas of interest. The first day will be focused exclusively on the basics, and is designed primarily for those who are unfamiliar with the instrument and have had no hands-on experience with the RHESSI software procedures. It will include introductions to high-energy solar physics, to the RHESSI mission and instrumentation, and to the Graphical User Interface (GUI). The second day is devoted to more advanced material of particular interest to experienced users, but nevertheless will be of value to beginners as well. The third through fifth days will include material and techniques for all levels of users. A more detailed agenda can be found on the workshop web site at: http://sprg.ssl.berkeley.edu:80/RHESSI/daw04/ Significant time will be set aside for attendees to practice the analysis procedures on their own laptops and to interact with RHESSI experts, most of whom will be in attendance all week. To facilitate one-on-one training, the number of attendees at the Berkeley workshop will be limited. A second workshop at or near Goddard is planned about 6 months later to accommodate the overflow. Preference will be given to hands-on users of RHESSI data, in particular, students and post-docs. Limited financial aid is available for students.
