Shock travel time of extreme events

Abstract:
Sun-Earth travel time of CME-driven shocks is an important indicator of
the extreme events. We compare the shock travel times of the 2003
October November storms with those of other historical events compiled
by Cliver et al. (1990). We find that the shock travel time is almost
always more than half a day. This implies an upper limit to the maximum
energy extractable from solar active regions.
