Properties of flares associated with and not associated with CMEs

Abstract:
We study a handful of flares not far from the limb that are and are not
associated with CMEs.  The questions we ask include: Do short-duration
flares associated with energetic CMEs have some characteristic features?
Are all flares, eruptive and confined, explained by the so-called
standard model?   We mainly deal with pre-RHESSI flares.
