Keogram data

A system of Automatic Geophysical Observatories (AGO) is currently operating in Antarctica. The AGO's are equipped with magnetometers, VLF-HF receivers, riometers and all-sky cameras. Summary plots of all-sky keograms are made public for scientific use. Due to the remote location and unmanned operation not the whole winter season is covered due to instrument failure. Large data gaps may also occur during sun illumination and sometimes bright moon light disturbs the data.

Keograms are time sequences of poleward-equatorward or east-west slices through an all-sky image. The location of the keogram strip in a raw image from P3 AGO station is shown. The top of the image points poleward, the bottom equatorward. An example keogram is shown below and several features within the image are:

The station name (P3) is given on top and the date, long or short exposure, and wavelength of monochromatic observation are given at the bottom.

Substorm poleward expansions can be seen after 2:00 and 23:00 UT and the equatorward expansion of the auroral oval can be seen before.

Moon light disturbs the observation between 9:00 and 13:00 UT.

Some dayside activity can be seen poleward of the station around 15:00 UT. Magnetic noon at P3 station is at 14:03 UT.

The keogram data for
1995
1996
1997
1998 AGO network and South Pole station
1999 South Pole station
2000 South Pole station
2001 South Pole station
2002 South Pole station
2003 South Pole station
are sorted according to the month and each plot shows all available stations for that day. For scientific use, especially for a zoom into a shorter time period, transformation to geographic or geomagnetic coordinates and absolute values please contact the all-sky camera PI
