Instrument Mode Information
On board the FAST spacecraft are 16 Instrument Operation Modes (IOM's)
of which 8 set parameters for the particle instruments and the other 8
set parameters for the field instruments. Each IOM emphasizes a measurement
of different physical parameters on different time scales, thereby concentrating
a specific science objective. The purpose of the IOM's is to essentially
command each set of field/particle instruments into a set pattern such that
adequate and precise scientific measurements can be made.
For more on the technical side, each IOM defines...
- telemetry data rates (for each packet type), readout order and burst
size
- particle detector energy sweeps and accumulation times
- fields signal selection, sample rates and density mode
- instrument power usage, housekeeping and default mode parameters
