The Imager for Magnetopause-to-Aurora Global Exploration IMAGE investigates the response of the magnetosphere to the time variable solar wind. The FUV instrument employs 3 detectors:
1. The Wideband Imaging Camera WIC to image the aurora in broad band for maximum spatial resolution day and night.
2. The Spectrographic Imager SI to measure different types of aurora and separating them by wavelength and to measure proton induced aurora by removing the bright geocorona emissions.
3. Geocorona photometers GEO to observe the distribution of the geocorona emissions to derive the magnetospheric hydrogen content responsible for neutral atom generation in the magnetosphere.
Technical details of the IMAGE FUV instrument are online available as PDF files.
IMAGE is a spin stabilized satellite which will rotate once in 120 s. This enables the GEO photometers to perform a complete 360 degrees measurement during one rotation but the imagers have to compensate the apparent motion of the imaged Earth with the TDI technique.
