Ion beams in the Earth's magnetotail: Origin, fate and impact

After a brief review of dispersed ion beams in the Earth's magnetotail, I will present recent Cluster observations of these intriguing structures. The observations shed light on some outstanding questions about these structures regarding their origin, their fate and their impact on magnetotail dynamics.
