" Electron Acceleration at Shocks: Geotail Observations "
Mitsuo Oka, Space Science Laboratory, University of California at Berkeley
The standard model of cosmic ray electron acceleration requires electrons to be pre-accelerated to mildy relativistic energies. As such, the Earth's bow shock and interplanetary shocks are excellent natural laboratories for the study of electron acceleration by (at least non-relativistic) shocks. In this seminar talk, I will present Geotail results with particular emphasis on its possible relationship with whistler waves. I will also present a brief review on related theories and discuss what we can expect from THEMIS/ARTEMIS observations.
