November 5, 2013:

"Non-Ideal MHD Physics: Hall and FLR"

Joe Huba, Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, DC

A discussion of non-ideal MHD processes will be presented. The focus will be on Hall and finite Larmor radius (FLR) physics. Linear wave modes introduced by the Hall term (e.g., whistler and KMC waves) and by the FLR term (i.e., ion diamagnetic drift wave) will be described. The effects of these terms on the Rayleigh-Taylor and Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities will be discussed using analytical and numerical simulation techniques. Additionally we will discuss the impact of the Hall term on 2D and 3D magnetic reconnection.
