ISTP Science Workshop Splinter Group Meeting:

Interplanetary Medium - Energy Transport, Shocks & Structures

Wednesday, April 8  8:30-12:30  -  Building 26,  Room 212

This session is open to informal discussions of any phenomena within the interplanetary medium. Please come with a provocative question and/or a couple of view graphs to express a point.  This is not a mini-AGU! We hope to lead informal discussions! If you wish to contribute please send a note to John  or Davin to let us know.

Consider commenting about these basic questions:
  1. Can the phenomenon be related to the solar source
  2. How does the phenomenon impact the state of the magnetosphere.

Some Examples of Provocative Questions:

Preliminary Agenda (this will not be strictly adhered to)

8:30
Solar origins:

9:30
Energy transport:
How is energy carried away from the sun and delivered to the magnetosphere?
  Acceleration of energetic particles.
Structures that deliver strong magnetic fields which enhance geomagnetic activity. (compression regions, ejecta)
Structures which deliver big ram pressure pulses.

10:30
Structures:
macro - CME's magnetic clouds, heliospheric current sheet,
          high speed/low speed stream structure.
micro - RD's, TD's, magnetic holes, Alfvenic turbulence:

11:30
Shocks:
  Multi-spacecraft observations.
  Energetic particles from shocks.
