Dust dynamics at Saturn

Howard and Horányi [1907] present new calculations of the stability loci for dust grain orbits about Saturn and make new predictions for observations of dust by Cassini. They calculate these loci for both dielectric and conducting grains, in prograde and retrograde orbits, with the plasma environment determining the sign of the charge. They report that among the possible types of halo orbits, the positive retrograde orbits with their relatively large velocities to the Cassini orbiter are most easily detected by the Cassini Cosmic Dust Analyzer.

Spacecraft measures asteroidal magnetic field

The irregular asteroid Braille (also known as 1992 KD) was discovered in May 1992. Deep Space 1 (DS1) performed a successful flyby at the asteroid in July 1999, passing Braille on the nightside with a relative velocity of 15 km/s and allowing, for the first time, a direct measurement of an asteroidal magnetic field. Richter et al. [1913] conclude that the measured field is simply the unperturbed dipole field of the asteroid and estimate the upper limit of Braille's magnetic moment to be about 2.1 X 1011 A-m2.

Iodine oxide: coast to troposphere

Hoffmann et al. [1949] perform laboratory experiments focusing on particle formation after photolysis of CH2I2 (diiodomethane) in the presence of ozone. They observe rapid new particle formation, composed purely of oxides of iodine, in the lower ppb-range of CH2I2. They suggest that the self-nucleation of iodine oxides provides an efficient source of natural condensable material in coastal environments.

Frieß et al. [1941] present ground-based zenith-sky measurements of Iodine Oxide (IO) in the Antarctic troposphere for 1999. They identify IO in the spectra throughout the year, where the values are somewhat higher in summer than in spring and autumn. From the analysis of the diurnal variation of the slant columns, the authors deduce that the bulk of the IO is situated in the lower troposphere with estimated mixing ratios of as much as 5-10 ppt.

Also in this issue, Allan et al. [1945] report on OIO (iodine dioxide) observations in the marine boundary layer at Cape Grim, Tasmania, for January 1999. Concentration of OIO was found to vary from less than 0.5 ppt to about 3 ppt, with the maximum concentration occurring after sunset. During the day, OIO is removed mainly by photochemistry with an uptake on aerosol accounting for the slower nighttime loss.

Laptev Sea impacts Arctic Ocean

The Laptev Sea's shallow shelf, characterized by high amounts of river runoff from the large Siberian river systems, is a key region for understanding global change processes. Changing wind patterns over the Laptev Sea in 1989 diverted Laptev Sea river water eastward and a significant salinification of the upper Eurasian basin began around this time. Using a coupled ice-ocean model, Johnson and Polyakov [2017] show that the 1990s' salinification in the Laptev Sea was, indeed, due to eastward diversion of river runoff and also to enhanced ice production and brine rejection. The salinity anomaly was then advected to the central Eurasian Basin. The replacement of fresh surface waters with more saline waters in the basin reduced vertical stratification and increased heat flux, releasing heat from the cold halocline layer to the upper layer of the basin.

Natural decadal-multidecadal fluctuations in the Pacific

Examining nearly one-century long (1900-1991) sea surface temperature (SST) and sea level pressure (SLP) records for the Pacific Ocean, Tourre et al. [2069] show that the low-frequency climate variability in the Pacific basin consists of two spatially coherent signals in covarying SST and SLP anomalies: an interdecadal signal (peaking within the 16 to 17-year period) and a decadal signal (peaking within the 10.8 and 11.9-year period) with distinct spatial evolutions. The authors report that the interdecadal signal is symmetric about the equator in the eastern Pacific and displays large SST and SLP anomalies in the midlatitudes. The decadal signal is a low-latitude phenomenon, with maxima about the equator. These natural decadal-multidecadal climatic modes may not only account for additional climatic variability beyond El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and such phenomena but may also interact with and modulate ENSO characteristics.

AMO influences U.S. precipitation

Enfield et al. [2077] present results relating low frequency changes in atmospheric general circulation associated with the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), a 65-80 year cycle in the North Atlantic SST field, and indexed with a ten-year running mean of SST anomalies in the ocean. The changes modulate the ENSO signal in the interior continental portions of the U.S: the likelihood of continental drought is higher when the AMO is in its positive/warm phase and is lower when the AMO is in its negative/cool phase. In the southeast U.S., however, rainfall and AMO are positively correlated.

Halo orbit (red line) of tiny charged dust grain floating above Saturn's equatorial plane. These orbits are theoretically possible, owing to the combined influence of Saturn's gravity, magnetic dipole field, corotational electric field, and the centrifugal force (insert). They may be observed by the Cassini Orbiter, now en route to Saturn. Large Image (57kb)
