MINIS telecon notes 11/02/05 Attending: Smith, Sample, Bering, Millan, Woodger, Holzworth, Kokorowski Please review for actions. ************************************* 1) Reviewed and updated assignments of individuals to external data sets. Everyone is encouraged to send David even preliminary figures or evaluations to post on the file sharing page ( http://sprg.ssl.berkeley.edu/~dsmith/minis/ ) Woodger: Maria Spasojevic (IMAGE) stuff ACE (solar wind parameters) Jerry Goldstein (IMAGE) plasmapause (was also going to *model* MAXIS pp.) Search coil at Pole (conjugate to N balloon) Mark Lessard & Al Weatherwax There were bursts correlated with x-rays (1 Hz range). Looking for circ polarization characteristic of EMIC. GOES magnetometer data coming (Janet Green for high time resolution, EMIC at L=6) Magnetometer/Riometer CHARISMA (second priority; formerly CANOPUS) NOAA/POES particles from Janet Green: proton contamination problem Maybe another student at Dartmouth? One of the ion channels is sensitive to > 2 MeV e-, might be able to use it. Add to SAMPEX data? with Craig Rodger: Need a detailed comparison paper. Millan, Woodger, Kokorowski will interface with CR. Kokorowski will contact (copying Smith, Holzworth, etc.): Halley VLF (Andy Smith) SANAE VLF (Arthur Hughes) Smith & Sample: Radoslav Bucik, CORONAS-F x-rays. Will visit SSL. Sample will take another look at SAMPEX GPS: Sample (hasn't started looking yet) GOES: [The knife-edge dropout is mostly adiabatic, but at some time afterwards (sooner? later?) there must be real losses since they don't come back.] ************************************* 2) GRL: Should concentrate on the core science, try to quantify loss rates and loss time versus ground area (plus lower limit on ground area). Will mention other available data in one paragraph at the end. Should include a way for readers to understand where and when payloads were active. Absolute flux comparisons w/ MAXIS & Kiruna, (how do the conditions matter?) How do multipoint measurements change the picture? E-field bursts that are truly temporal (simultaneous on both balloons) both poleward & sunward. Abrupt increases in reconnection rate on the nose. John will incorporate what Gar has sent him and make trial GRL text for Gar's approval. John will look at Bz to see if there was a reason to expect sudden nose reconnection associated with our events. John will send around an outline for comments. ************************************* 3) AGU: Need overview ("what is the space weather") and summary ("what is your hottest result") slides. Send both to Gar ASAP! David will schedule Tuesday lunch at AGU. Please send him names of external people to invite. ************************************* 4) Other Papers: Plasmapause paper (MINIS, MAXIS & Kiruna w/ Goldstein) McCarthy, Holzworth, Bering, Smith to discuss solar flare response papers. X-rays and e-field together or separate papers? upoming: Millan & O'Brien: Special session for Spring AGU on losses ************************************* 5) Record of MINIS publications: Everyone send me your presentation and paper references for posting at http://sprg.ssl.berkeley.edu/~dsmith/minis/publications.html (q.v.) ************************************* 6) "Subcommittee" discussions to be scheduled soon: Smith, Sample, Bale, Pulupa on DC magnetometer data (this Friday at SSL) McCarthy, Holzworth, Bering, Smith on solar flare response (as soon as McCarthy returns from Ice) *************************************
