MURI meeting notes March 3, 2004 (sketchy, biased, and with no graphics) Motto: "H-alpha is the garbage heap of the solar atmosphere!" Comment #1: If anybody reads these and finds errors, please let me know at hhudson@ssl.berkeley.edu. Comment #2: My notes are more complete in places where I am (a) not so interested, but (b) not bored. Fisher: discussion of programmatic things. [Comment: notes from here on out may get a bit sketchy as the meeting breaks up into splinters and shards]. A list inspired by yesterday's erasures follows: I. Data-driven simulations - MHD modeling directly from the vmg data and our LCT work on 8210 specifically. - AR8210 higher-res MHD simulation (UCB/UM) (LOS and VMG data) - AR 10486 photospheric-chromospheric VMG-driven MHD (WPS, TRM, KDL) II. Data-inspired simulations - Studies embedding ARS into large-scale simulations (ZM, JL) - 1 AU coronal/heliospheric simulations (DO, UCB, SAIC) - May 1997 event MHD simulation (IS, IR, YL, TF) - May 1997 MHD simulation using IVM data (ZM, KDL, YL) III. Technique development/testing - ILCT/MEF development (BW) -> investigate non-disk-center configurations - Put observed V_z into LCT (TRM) - NLFF code development (JM) (Spherical, connections to PFSS models) - NLFF models vs photospheric and chromospheric MGs (McT, TRM, KDL) - Faster LCT code, larger-scale FOV IV. Other - MC fit for Halloween events IP data (RCC, YL) Definitions of "data-driven" and "data-inspired" modeling - discussions. Where does "data assimilation" fit in? We are not ready for the latter (GF). DD: Use vector data to initialize and drive an MHD simulation. DI: Use the data to parametrize initial conditions and flow geometry. Comment (JL): Need some sensitivity to the flare/CME relationships during this work. Q: Can we understand flare/CME relationships better? A: Brief ordinary bickering about resistivity in MHD models. Comment (HSH) about RHESSI workshop work making use of McTiernan or other AR magnetic models for exploring non-thermal emissions. Q: How about legacy, other than the literature (JL)? A: shards and splinters - HH
