by Carole Maso
Maso has created a compelling and powerful account of one woman's grief over her mother's death. She calls back two generations into her family, to tell the tale of her mother, who was a famous poet, and other members of the family. The title's metaphoric meaning is developed in descriptions of a Native American ghost dance ritual. The novel is sometimes very difficult to read in its nonlinear timeline and the painful extremes its characters sometimes reach in their struggles. Passages are positively surreal, but speak directly to the subconscious. The reader will find a beautifully written story of loss and transformation.
