Picasso

by Gertrude Stein

Gertrude Stein was acquainted with Picasso during his life in Paris in the early years of this century. In this small (50 pages) but incredibly dense book, she describes her impressions of his art, his inspiration, and his sight. The book is often remarkably insightful. Stein describes well the artist's eye for what is seen and what is felt. Her writing is musical, with themes and details repeating throughout the book. Along with 61 illustrations, Picasso's life is outlined, and his inspiration explained through her eyes. We see a great painter through the filter of a powerful personality.
