The building, which occupies four blocks, was conceived as a walled garden with multiple large welcoming entrances. Originally slated to be free and open to the public, the museum was designed to be an urban park where pedestrians could walk in and out at their leisure. The galleries are arranged so that the roof of one serves as the terrace of another. The galleries are all connected through a series of trellised passageways and broad flights of stairs which also give access to the planted terraces. The entire building is built of a light colored concrete with a sandblasted finish, but lush plantings have grown over most of the building submerging its straight lines and creating a lush, colorful garden.
