I don't think implosions should be rare! All of the energy that is radiated away, or that is blasted away in the eruption, presumably comes from magnetic storage. The interesting question has to do with the motions in the impulsive phase, since even the radiation in the impulsive phase (let alone the CME launch) is a major fraction of the total flare energy.

Simple arguments about tension vs. pressure forces etc may be OK, but the energetics argument seems to be very simple and clear. In crime mysteries (think Agatha Christie), "Follow the money" is a good guide for detection. In physics mysteries, "Follow the energy" probably is a good analog.
