WIND 3-D Plasma and Energetic Particle Experiment Description
EESA-H and EESA-L
The experiment consists of three basic detector systems:
- semiconductor telescopes (SST)
- electron electrostatic analyzers (EESA)
- ion electrostatic analyzers (PESA)
Each of these is designed to cover a different part of the
suprathermal particle population.
The detector characteristics are summarized below:
Electrostatic analyzers
- EESA-HIGH
- species - electrons
- energy range - 100 eV to 30 keV
- field of view - 360 X 90 degrees
- geometric factor - 0.1 E cm2 sr
- EESA-LOW
- species - electrons
- energy range - 3 eV to 30 keV
- field of view - 180 X 14 degrees
- geometric factor - 1.3e-2 E cm2 sr
- PESA-HIGH
- species - protons
- energy range - 3 eV to 30 keV
- field of view - 360 X 14 degrees
- geometric factor - 1.5e-2 E cm2 sr
- PESA-LOW
- species - protons
- energy range 3 eV to 30 keV
- field of view - 180 X 14 degerees
- geometric factor 1.6e-4 E cm2 sr
Semiconductor Detector Telescopes
- Foil F
- species - electrons
- energy range - 25 eV to 400 keV
- field of view - 180 X 20 degreees
- geometric factor 1.7 cm2 sr
- Magnetic O
- species - protons
- energy range - 20 keV to 6 MeV
- field of view - 180 X 20 degreees
- geometric factor 1.7 cm2 sr
- Telescope FT
- species - electrons
- energy range - 400 keV to 1 MeV
- field of view - 72 X 20 degreees
- geometric factor .36 cm2 sr
- Telescope OT
- species - protons
- energy range - 6 MeV to 11 MeV
- field of view - 72 X 20 degreees
- geometric factor .36 cm2 sr
To avoid effects of the spacecraft potential on the low energy particle
detection, EESA-L and EESA-H are mounted on the end of a 0.5 m boom,
while PESA-L, PESA-H and the SSTs are mounted on the end of an opposing
0.5 m boom.
