Traces from the recording compasses at Kew Gardens, London, for three consecutive days. There are two flare variations: the prompt flare-associated part, called a "crotchet" by people in those days, and the magnetic storm itself some 17 hours later. This figure was scanned from a 1937 tome, Chapman and Bartels (written about halfway back in time from now to Carrington!).
