THE AURORA

Dawn of the North

"Aurora Borealis" meaning "dawn of the north" was a term believed to have been coined by Galileo Galilei to describe the brilliant curtains of light or "northern lights" which appeared in the northern polar regions of the Earth. Later, as the southern polar regions of the Earth were explored, "southern lights" were also observed and called the "Aurora Australis" or "dawn of the south".
