TELEVISION IN THE SKY
A Cathode Ray Tube and Aurora Creation Analogy

The Sun-Earth System

The Cathode Ray Tube (CRT)

The sun and the earth are connected although we can't visibly see how.  Events that happen on the sun influence phenomena like the Aurora that happen on the earth.

The magnetic field and solar particles from the sun influence the magnetic field of the earth..  This is shown in the diagram above.

Events which happen on the sun, like the creation of coronal holes, flares, and sunspots, move and change the magnetic fields of both the sun and earth.  Changes in the magnetic field can force beautiful and dynamic auroral events to occur on Earth.

A television or computer monitor contains a glass tube.  The front of this glass tube is where the image appears.  This glass tube is called a Cathode Ray Tube or CRT.

A CRT is a vacuum tube that produces and accelerates electrons in the form of a beam.  This "electron beam" travels through the tube to a phosphorescent screen where the image appears.

When the electrons strike the colored phosphorescent dots on the screen in a pattern, pictures and text are created.
