ROCKET TO THE AURORA

Why would you want to study the auroras?

Curiosity mostly!

As curious life forms, humans want to know why and how things work.  The more we know about the aurora, the closer we become to understanding how the sun's activity affects the solar wind and Earth.

By understanding the processes associated with auroral creation, the better able we become in developing models which would help to predict the intensity of auroral activity.  At times when auroral activity is high, other things happen which interfere with our daily lives.  The processes which create the aurora also interfere significantly with radio and satellite communications, as well as with a power lines and some defense systems.

The ability to predict auroral intensity has become increasingly important as human activity expands into polar regions and into space.  That's why scientists want to study the auroras.
