USE THE KP INDEX TO PREDICT WHERE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO SEE THE AURORA

[Current Kp index is 2]

Kp line above indicates where the aurora may be seen. The larger the Kp index, the lower in latitude the Kp boundary will be, resulting in better auroral viewing for a greater portion of the Earth's population.

Information about the Kp Index

Kp index predicts at what magnetic latitude you should be able to see the aurora. Magnetic latitude is different from geographic latitude because the Earth's magnetic north is tilted relative to geographic north (i.e. the North Pole).

Use the form below to obtain your magnetic latitude based on your geographic latitude and longitude. Then use the table at right to determine whether Kp predicts an aurora at your magnetic latitude.
