Science Goals

Click on images above to learn how STEREO uses simultaneous observations from the two spacecraft to study solar events

Primary Science Objectives

  • Understand the causes and mechanisms of CME initiation
  • Characterize the propagation of CMEs through the heliosphere
  • Discover the mechanisms and sites of energetic particle acceleration in the low corona and the interplanetary medium
  • Develop a 3D time-dependent model of the magnetic topology, temperature, density, and velocity structure of the ambient solar wind

New IMPACT Investigation Approaches

  • Multipoint in-situ characterization of ICMEs and SEPs resulting from imaged CMEs at different separations at 1AU
  • Quadrature measurements with the STEREOscopic SECCHI imagers
  • Space Weather detection, modeling and prediction from multiple perspective
