THEMIS Tohban

This page is for the use of the THEMIS Tohban, and is maintained by Jonathan Eastwood (jonathan.eastwood at imperial.ac.uk).

What is a Tohban?

Tohban: (org.) japanese (def.) operator; duty officer

The Tohban is a THEMIS scientist who helps the spacecraft operators in the Mission Operation Center (MOC) to optimize the science quality of the observations, and maintain the working order of the scientific instruments on board the five THEMIS spacecraft.

The role is based on prior mission experience at the lab with RHESSI; the starting point for this webpage was the RHESSI webpage; which is where I got this image:

Updating the Tohban Website

When you have written your tohban report, it will be distributed via the tohban mailing list, where I will pick it up and place it on the website. If necessary, the tohban can upload it to the website as well, by following these instructions:

1. Accessing the website

The web page sits in the ~themistohban user account. Rather than compromise the security of the account by distributing the password, an alternative system using SSH public key authentication has been set up. You will have to create an SSH identity in your UNIX account or on your PC, and send the public key to Robert Boyd (rboyd@ssl), who will add it to the list of allowed keys. When you try to log into themistohban from your UNIX account or using secure shell client on your PC, this is used to check that you are who you say you are. You enter a password to exchange the keys. If you need instructions to create an SSH identity, email Robert.

2. Uploading your Tohban report

  1. Save your report as a '.txt' (notepad) file on your computer. (The name should be in this format: Tohbanreport_2007-07-31_2007-08-06.txt) The date convention for Tohban reports is from the previous Tuesday to the Monday on which you are writing it.
  2. Open your SSH file transfer program, access the ~themistohban account. Go to the folder called /public_html/tohbanreports.
  3. Drag and drop your report into this folder.

3. Updating the reports webpage

  1. For others to find your report, you must add a link to it on the Tohban report webpage.
  2. Drag and drop reports.htm from the /public_html directory onto your desktop (or whereever).
  3. Edit it either by right clicking on it and selecting 'edit' (not 'open') or use your favourite editor.
  4. Add an entry at the bottom for your tohban report.
  5. Make a hyperlink (e.g. right click and select hyperlink). Type in the address e.g. http://sprg.ssl.berkeley.edu/~themistohban/tohbanreports/Tohbanreport_2007-07-31_2007-08-06.txt
  6. You shouldn't just put the filename
  7. Save the filem then drag and drop back into the /public_html
  8. Check to make sure it works!
  9. Log off

Making a hyperlink

As stated above, every hyperlink must begin with http://sprg.ssl.berkeley.edu/~themistohban/ .  This will then link directly to the file that is online.  You then add the rest of the extension, i.e. the folder(s) and the filename.  If we do it this way, there shouldn't be problems with broken links after different people update the site.
