Science Overview: Solar/Interplanetary Activity within CISM
Solar outputs drive space weather through
the particles and fields of the extended solar
atmosphere (solar wind), and by
direct radiation. The key solar/interplanetary
parameters are the solar wind velocity, density, and vector
magnetic field at Earth, and the radiation at
wavelengths shortward of the ultraviolet.
The Solar/Interplanetary Node of CISM addresses both scientific and practical questions:
- How does the Sun control space weather?
- How can we maximize the lead-time for forecasting?
The planned modeling employs a comprehensive
set of observations for both boundary conditions
and model validation. Major tools and strategies to be
used are described here, together with
some expected results and products for
technology and education applications.
