- Examination of MDI images
of the photospheric
magnetic field on 5-8 Jan
1997, shows no
extraordinary activity at the
projected time of the
coronal transient, although
there is evidence of
evolution of the two active
regions on the disk. Click on

- The southern hemisphere
active region on which the
halo appeared to be
centered showed only
modest changes, although
it was reported that a local
filament disrupted (a
well-known proxy for CME
occurrence), and that some
new sunspots appeared in
the extended plage that
made up most of the region
- suggesting flux
emergence. Click on
