Reconstruction of the Solar/Interplanetary Disturbances for the Space Weather Event on 6-10 Jan 1997

(*)
Examination of MDI images of the photospheric magnetic field on 5-8 Jan 1997, shows no extraordinary activity at the projected time of the coronal transient, although there is evidence of evolution of the two active regions on the disk. The southern hemisphere active region on which the halo appeared to be centered showed only modest changes, although it was reported that a local filament disrupted (a well-known proxy for CME occurrence), and that some new sunspots appeared in the extended plage that made up most of the region - suggesting flux emergence.
