Space Shuttle Columbia emblazons the pre-dawn clouds as it soars into the sky on its 27th flight into space on mission STS-109

Space Shuttle Atlantis roars into the sky above the primitive sand dunes in the foreground.

An aerial view of Launch Complex 39 shows the south and west sides of the Vehicle Assembly Building. The curved roadway heading to the VAB leads to the high bay 2, the Safe Haven facility constructed in 2000. The white building in the foreground is the Processing Control Center. Beyond it is the Orbiter Processing Facility, bays 1 and 2. The OPF bay 3 is farther still, closer to the VAB. Farther in the background are the waters of Banana Creek in the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.

Tour Recommendations

1. If you have requested and received a NASA invitation
and have registered with NASA guest services, then
you can be hosted to an internal NASA/KSC site
on buses that depart from near the Visitor's center
1.5hrs prior to launch in accordance with
guest info at: http://guestops.hq.nasa.gov/THEMIS.html
If you have never done this before, this special treat
is an unforgettable experience especially if you have
kids. Food is sold at the viewing site.

2. If you have not requested a NASA invitation, or if
you want to view the launch from as close as possible,
the THEMIS team has staked out an optimal location
at the beach. Here are directions to and description
of that site. Look for a THEMIS flag as the meeting sign.

You can meet the KSC launch team at Grills shortly
thereafter, in a party atmosphere.
The Grills Seafood Deck and Tiki Bar is at:
505 Glen Cheek Dr
Cape Canaveral, FL 32920
tel. (321) 868-2226

Probe separation will be at 71min after launch.
First contacts will be completed ~2hrs after launch.
