The New York Times travel section published a very good general overview of things to do and see in Berkeley: "36 Hours in Berkeley, Calif." A somewhat older article in the New York Times "The Quirky Heart Of the East Bay" still provides good insights into the general area.
The city of San Francisco is accessible via Bay Area Rapid Transit
(BART), and is a 30-minute ride away from downtown
