Directions to the Berkeley City Club

NOTE: Directions to Campus Housing and the Hotel Shattuck Plaza are the same as to the Berkeley City Club, which are 0.3 miles apart (see map below).

By Bayporter Shuttle Bus:

The Bayporter Express departs from both SFO and OAK. Reservations are required and can be made electronically. The Bayporter is a door-to-door service, and will drop you off right at the hotel. The Bayporter will also pick you up for your return to the airport; simply register the time of your flight, and Bayporter will arrange a time window for pickup. The one-way cost is $32 from SFO, and $25 from Oakland Airport.

By Bay Area Rapit Transit (BART):

From SFO:The BART station is located on the north side of the International terminal. If you are arriving domestically, you may take the Red AirTrain line from your domestic terminal to BART, or you may walk 5-10 minutes, following the signs to the International terminal. More information and a diagram can be found at the BART Airport Connections Guide.

You will need to buy a ticket from one of the machines. There are now two kinds of ticket machines. The Charge-a-Ticket machines accept credit cards, ATM cards, and cash (bills only), but do not give change. The regular vending machines accept cash and coins, and give change. You may buy tickets up to $60 at the vending machines and up to $69 at the Charge-a-Ticket machines, so you can use your ticket for multiple trips.

The fare between San Francisco International Airport and Downtown Berkeley is $8.65 each way.

The simplest way to get to Berkeley is to take the yellow Pittsburg/Bay Point line from the airport to the MacArthur station in Oakland. Cross over to the other side of the platform and catch an orange or red Richmond-bound train to the Downtown Berkeley station. .

From Oakland Airport:Travel from Oakland is a bit more complex than from San Francisco as you first need to take a bus from the airport to the BART station. Easiest is to take the AirBART bus, which
goes directly to the Coliseum/Oakland Airport BART station. This costs $3 (or just $1 if you are 65 or older), which may be paid in cash (exact change only - driver carries no change) or with a ticket from a BART vending machine. Note that you must use a separate $3 ticket since (unlike BART itself) you will not get the ticket back. Alternatively, you can take a local city bus, AC Transit route 50, which also goes to the Coliseum BART station and costs $2, but this will probably be more trouble than it is worth.

There are three streets in front of Oakland airport, and hence three curbsides. You will need to cross both streets to the third curbside for AirBART. More information and a diagram can be found here.

You will need to buy a BART ticket as well from one of the machines, either at the airport or at the BART station. There are two kinds of ticket machines. The Charge-a-Ticket machines accept credit cards, ATM cards, and cash (bills only), but do not give change. The regular vending machines accept cash and coins, and give change. You may buy tickets up to $60 at the vending machines and up to $69 at the Charge-a-Ticket machines, so you can use your ticket for multiple trips (but NOT on AirBART - you need a separate ticket for this).

Fare between Coliseum/Oakland Airport station and Downtown Berkeley station is $2.35 each way.

To get to Berkeley, take the orange Richmond-bound train to the Downtown Berkeley station. Signs will tell you the destination of each train. Be careful to not board a blue or green San Francisco-bound train unless you want to go there instead!

Total trip time will be 1 - 1 1/2 hours. The AirBART bus comes every 10 minutes on weekdays and Saturdays and every 20 minuters in the evenings and on Sundays (note, though, that U.S. buses are not as punctual as European or Japanese buses!) and it takes 15 minutes to get to the Coliseum station. BART trains are every 15 minutes, and take 25 minutes to travel to Downtown Berkeley.

Once in Berkeley: From the Downtown Berkeley station, exit on the south side of the station, towards Alston Way (this will be back in the direction from which the train came). When you come up the escalator to the main entrance, turn left. The Shattuck Plaza Hotel is on the corner of Shatuck and Alston, just 1/2 block away. To get to the Berkeley City Club, walk 3 more blocks south down Shattuck Avenue to Durant Avenue. Turn left and follow Durant uphill 2 blocks to the Berkeley City Club, which will be on on your left just past Ellsworth St. Follow Durant three more blocks uphill to find the Unit 1 Housing Complex just past the Durant Hotel.

The BART system map can be found here. For more information, visit BART.gov where you may also download pdf overviews in several different languages.
